St. Mary, Star of the Sea School

Good morning! Here is the next installment of our teacher feature! This week we are featuring our wonderful middle school teacher, Mrs. McGrane!💙

My full name is Rachel McGrane. This is my second year at St. Mary and my second year of teaching. I have only taught middle school ELA and don’t think I will ever teach any other grade or subject. Middle schoolers are so much fun! I attended St. Mary from Kindergarten to 8th grade (graduated in 1998) and have always felt a strong connection to this school. My favorite subject to teach is literature. I love discussing literature and hearing different perspectives. I also enjoy taking literature classes (for the same reasons) and reading books about how to become a better teacher. It is really hard to pick a favorite part of being a teacher, so I am going to list a couple of favorites: nurturing a love of reading in my students, watching students grow, and seeing the “A-ha” moments of learning. The best part of living in California is that I am near my mom and husband’s family. I am so blessed that my children get to spend so much time with their grandparents and build strong relationships with them. My favorite travel destination is anywhere that I get to visit family and friends such as New York, Salt Lake City, and Denver. I really enjoy cities that are close to nature and have opportunities for hiking, scenic drives, outdoor activities, and live music. I really hope to go to concerts once Covid is over. Attending concerts is one of my favorite pastimes and I am really missing them. I used to go to one every couple of months, at least. Watching a live-streamed concert is okay, but nowhere close to the experience of being there in person. I want all of my students to leave my class knowing that they are enough, that they matter, that they are valuable members of our community and that they will always have my support.

You are an amazing teacher 👍🏻👏🏻 Thank you for everything you are doing for our children. You are a blessing for our family and the School.🙏🏻

Thank you Mrs McGrane! Lily says she is very prepared for her high school classes. Middle School teachers ROCK!

I have loved watching you bloom as a teacher. Truly it is your passion. It is also pretty exciting for me to see the third generation of our family at St. Mary's (myself, you, and now Neal in preschool)!

Thank you for your intrepid/pioneering work!

You are such a fantastic and passionate teacher.

Good morning! Here is the weekly installment of our teacher feature! This week we are featuring our wonderful middle school math, religion, and history teacher, Mr. Howell! 💙

My full name is Joshua Howell III. I’ve been teaching at St. Mary’s since 2014. I started as a substitute teacher in VUSD in 2007 and subbed K-12. Disillusionment with the public school system brought me to St. Mary’s and a parishioner suggested I try to get a sub position in the Diocese. I attended a Job fair and met Ms. Rose Navarro, who was Assistant Principal at the time. My favorite subject is math. I had a financial/ accounting background when I was in the corporate world which, of course, is based on the use of math and financial analysis, and I love working with and teaching children, so when I retired from corporate life, I felt teaching math was a perfect fit with my background and aspirations. My favorite thing about being a teacher is witnessing when my students “get it” and can understand real-world practical applications of Mathematics. I love living in California for the weather, weather, weather. My favorite travel destination is Paris. I believe I was French in my former life. (Just kidding). France is such a diverse country and I love Paris because I was raised in a big cosmopolitan city and Paris has maintained its cultural history and environment. I’m planning a trip to Eastern Europe in 2023 once Covid is over. I want all my students to leave my class knowing that they can be successful if they apply themselves, prioritize and focus on the important things of life. Keep the faith, believe in prayer and remember that God loves you.
